Adversity hits all of us at some point. We are not immune against it. The Merriam-Webster dictionary describes it as: “a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune”. What differs between us is how we react to it.
We all want to have a good life. And none of us want to face difficulties. But that’s not reality. But how do we overcome adversity when it hits us?
Last year was a tough year for me. I got diagnosed with APL, a form of Leukemia. Talk about adversity and when it hits you. This one hit hard. I touched on this in other blog posts, too. It’s one thing to go to the hospital. It’s completely different, if the nurse asks you upon arrival if you have a will. That’s when I realized that my situation was indeed serious.
I made it so far. The cancer is in remission, while I am still going through treatment and will for a while. What helped me cope with all this are some of the things I will talk about today. Not all of it applies to this situation, but some of it does and has helped me keep on keeping on. I am sure it will help you, too. Whatever your situation.
1. Stay positive
I know this one is hard to do at times. But overcoming adversity has a lot to do with your mindset. As I said before, it’s important how you respond to challenges, not so much what happens. Staying and being positive in face of adversity means to search for the good in the situation. And there is always some positive takeaway even from the worst situations.
2. Be kind to yourself
A lot of how we deal with adversity has something to do with the self-talk that we do. How do you talk to yourself when difficulty arises? Are you beating yourself down or do you do a pep talk? My point is, that it is vital in facing adversity to be kind to yourself. It doesn’t help you or the situation if you are negative. It doesn’t help you focus on solutions.
3. Accept reality
Accepting that adversity will hit us at some point or another is going to make it easier for us to deal with it. It doesn’t help to be in denial of the things that are happening. This will not help you deal with it in the best way possible. Adversity is part of life.
4. Let others help you
Ask for help if you need it. There is nothing wrong with admitting that you need help. We all do at some point. This is not weakness. It’s being realistic. Talk to your friends and family and let them help you if you need it.
5. Let others inspire you
There are many stories of people out there, that can inspire us. Search for them and read them. It might give you the boost that you need to overcome what you are dealing with.
There are many more ways to overcome adversity. But these are the ones that are on the top of my list and have helped me tremendously in dealing with even the biggest challenges.
Here they are once more:
- Stay positive
- Be kind to yourself
- Accept reality
- Let others help you
- Let others inspire you
